- Balloons were first made from animal bladders. Before rubber was invented, early balloons were made from dried animal bladders, mainly pig bladders.
- The first rubber balloon was created in 1824 by Professor Michael Faraday.
- Foil balloons are made from plastic and metal.
- Helium-filled balloons rise because helium is lighter than air, causing the balloons to float.
- Latex balloons are biodegradable. Natural latex balloons decompose at about the same rate as an oak leaf, making them a more eco-friendly option.
- A tree can produce latex for up to 40 years.
- If the sound of a balloon popping startles you, you’re not alone. A bursting balloon creates a small sonic boom! Once a hole is made in an inflated balloon, the quick release of the balloon’s energy, or air, causes the hole to grow at almost the speed of sound in rubber. Since this speed is much higher than the speed of sound in air, the hole in the balloon breaks the sound barrier, creating a sonic boom.
