Tying Ribbon Around a Foil Balloon

Tying Ribbon to the tail

A ribbon should always be tied low down on the tail of a balloon (see image below). DO NOT tie ribbon high up around the neck of a balloon or above the valve opening (punched hole), because it will damage the self-sealing valve causing the balloon to deflate.

Some manufacturers print “TIE RIBBON HERE” on the tail balloon. Please follow the instructions as printed on the balloon or any instructions provided by the manufacturer on the package.

Taping Ribbon to the tail

If you prefer to tape a ribbon to a balloon, place the tape and ribbon onto the opposite side of the punch hole of the self-sealing valve. Use heavy-duty clear adhesive tape, because some tapes are made with adhesive that may not stick well to the balloon. The tape needs to stick well or the ribbon may fall off the balloon and your balloon(s) will float away.

Tips

Most people find it easier to inflate balloons first and then attach the ribbon and weight after. However, to avoid accidentally releasing the balloon, you should attach the ribbon and weight before inflating the balloon. Manufacturers only guarantee a balloon for one-time use, but by tying the ribbon below the valve or using tape, you may be able to refill/reuse the balloon several times.
