Some foil balloons are made with self-sealing valves and others are made without valves depending on the size of the balloon. Balloons without valves– also called air-fill or mini foil balloons– require heat sealing once they have been inflated. Professionals generally use heat sealers to seal balloons, however, you can use a flat iron or curling iron, if done correctly, to seal the balloon.
Instructions for heat-sealing with a Heat Sealer
- Turn on the heat sealer and choose a low heat setting. Wait for the sealer to heat up.
- Inflate the balloon with a hand pump while pinching the neck of the balloon around the tip of the pump.
- Pump until fully inflated.
- Insert the neck of the balloon between the lever of the heat sealer.
- Press down and hold the lever closed for 5 seconds.
- Release the lever and remove the balloon.
Instructions for Heat-Sealing with a Flat/Curling Iron
- Wrap the plates of flat/curling iron with tin foil. this will keep the iron and balloon from being damaged.
- Warm up the iron to the lowest heat setting.
- Inflate the balloon with a hand pump while pinching the neck of the balloon around the tip of the pump.
- Hold the balloon neck between the plates of the flat/curling iron for 5 seconds and then release the handle.
- If the balloon does not seal the first time then heat can be increased gradually.
Please Note: Do not attempt to heat-seal latex, or stuffing balloons because they will melt.
